Janice Answers Your Questions About Massage

Q. What sets “Body In Knead Massage Clinic” apart from other massage clinics?

Some massage practitioners spend the entire hour working on just one area of the body.  I have developed a massage style that allows for extra time on your “trouble spots” without ignoring the rest (arms, hands, legs, feet, etc.).  That way you don’t have to choose between deep tissue massage or relaxation massage – you can enjoy the benefits of both with the Body in Knead Signature Massage.

Q. Does massage have to hurt to be effective?

Massage therapy should not cause additional pain in order to relieve pain.  Most people cannot relax if they are experiencing discomfort from a therapist who is working too aggressively.  Massage performed outside of the patient’s comfort level only serves to cause additional stress to the patient.  It is up to you let the therapist know if the massage is feeling invasive or too deep.

Q. How is craniosacral therapy different from deep tissue massage?

Unlike deep tissue massage, the practitioner does not use force to cause a reaction to the body; instead, the therapist’s hands follow the subtle movement of the craniosacral system, using gentle touch on specific areas of the body.  During the 10 Step Protocol of a basic craniosacral session, the patient is fully clothed and lies on his back the entire time.

Q. What do I wear for a massage session?

You will be given privacy so that you can disrobe for the massage session; the table is sheeted and you're provided with a large towel or blanket for modesty and comfort.  During a craniosacral session, you should wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing (no jeans, please!).

Q. How often should I get a massage?

Everyone is different – we all have stress in our lives, but we all process it differently. There is no “cookie-cutter” answer to this question.  You decide what works best for you, whether it’s something you choose to do every week, every month, or every season!

Q. How can massage help my child?

Kids with ADD / ADHD and certain learning disorders such as autism, have show improvement with craniosacral therapy in particular.  Deep tissue massage helps kids who are active in sports – by alleviating muscular pain and stiffness and helping to prevent injuries.

Q. How can massage help the elderly?

Massage relieves arthritis pain and promotes healthy muscle tone & joint movement.  Craniosacral therapy can improve memory & depression, as well as provide a gentle & nurturing touch.

Q. Is massage safe for pregnant women?

Yes…many women enjoy getting regular massages during pregnancy.  I recommend that all expectant moms consult with their OB-GYN before scheduling a massage.

Q. Aside from pain management & stress relief, what else can massage therapy treat?

Fibromyalgia patients have gotten relief with regular massage therapy sessions.  MS patients have experienced improvement in their symptoms as well. I have treated patients with shin splints, migraines, tendonitis, TMJ issues, sinus pain & congestion, anxiety issues….the list continues to grow!

Q. What should NOT be treated with massage?

Some examples include broken bones & varicose veins.  Massage can make certain skin conditions worst, and it can cause some types of cancer to spread.  To be certain that massage therapy is right for you, I recommend that you address any of your questions & health concerns with your doctor.
